Katie Bullon – Franchise Story
Learn more about Katie’s experience with activ, having been a franchisee for years.
What were your reasons behind researching starting your own business and specifically a franchise business?
So, back in 2014, whilst on maternity leave, I was all about finding something self-employed that would let me juggle life with my new baby. I wanted flexibility without sacrificing my salary – something I had worked hard for. Researching franchise routes seemed perfect – ready-made systems, plus the freedom to set my own workload and how I wanted to grow the business.
What was it that appealed to you about activ?
When I eventually found activ, it was a no-brainer for me. As an experienced marketing manager, I could capitalise on my expertise and tap into my network for clients. Plus, doing what I love while avoiding the hassle of employing staff was a huge win. activ's support was perfect for me at the time, especially in areas like tech where I needed a boost. It combined perfectly with my skills, making the journey incredibly rewarding and seamless.
How did you find the start-up process in getting your business off the ground?
Starting up with activ was actually a breeze. Which, given that I had a 9-month-old baby was invaluable. Following the framework, I hit the ground running and brought clients straight in. Set pricing and things like ready-made marketing materials and legal templates meant I didn’t waste time on set up tasks. I just got immediately stuck into servicing clients, and most importantly invoicing.
Do you have any words of wisdom for other budding entrepreneurs considering a franchise option?
My advice to fellow entrepreneurs exploring franchises is to choose well. With the right franchise you'll have the backing of a support team while enjoying the freedom to make your own decisions and turn a profit. Self-
employment can be isolating, but not at a franchise like activ. You will be joining a vibrant network for troubleshooting, sharing ideas, and staying motivated. It's like having a built-in support system, making the journey more fulfilling.
Given that you now own and manage the activ franchise network further to acquisition in 2021, how have you made it even better?
Taking over activ in 2021 was a big step but one I was driven to take on. Being a former franchisee, I intimately understand the challenges and needs of our network both for existing franchisees and the future. This insider perspective has driven targeted improvements, massively enhancing support and resources. I've poured significant investment into the business, ensuring its relevant and first-class for aspiring marketing entrepreneurs in 2024. Leading this franchise fills me with pride and gratitude; it's not just a business, but a community I'm genuinely so proud of. I feel lucky that I get to lead this amazing business and the fantastic people within it.
